When serving as a Clerk of Court, also commonly referred to as the Clerk of the Circuit Court, an individual is directly responsible for performing a large number of tasks. Becoming a Clerk of Court typically requires being elected, and the official holds the office for a set number of years. There is no certain term length that is consistent all around the country, but in general, the term lasts for four to six years before an election is held. The most important job of the Clerk of Court is record keeping. They are in charge of keeping detailed records of everything that moves through the court system in their local area. This includes cases as well as applications for documents like marriage licenses. Because the Clerk is in charge of keeping track of the court's records, it is also their job to assist individuals who are searching for public records through the court.

Although the primary function of the Clerk of Court is to serve as a record keeper, in most areas they also hold the title of the financial officer of the court. This job also comes with a whole set of different responsibilities. Primarily, the Clerk must receive any payments owed to the court system. When money is past due, the Clerk may also hire an outside collection agency or serve as a collection agent himself in order to collect the money. He is also responsible for any money distributed from the court, and detailed records must be kept for any money that moves through the court. Because the office of the Clerk of Courts comes with so many responsibilities and duties, the Clerk almost always has a staff of individuals who are able to serve and represent the Clerk while performing various tasks.

The Flagler County Clerk of Court is Gail Wadsworth. She has served in the office since being elected in 2000. She has been certified for the position through the Supreme Court of Florida, and she continues to take courses and attend seminars in order to maintain her certification.
